The department is appealing to the public to stop the practice.
Sibu Zone department chief Andy Alie said the number of open burning cases the department handled were eight in February, 11 in March and 19 as at mid-April.“The open burning activities affected forests, gardens and fields,” said Alie.
He said that open burning activities contributed to fires and smoke emissions, which brought adverse effects to the environment.“I also hope the Department of Environment and other relevant agencies assist in monitoring and curbing these activities that contribute to air pollution,” added Alie. - By ANDY CHUA
