Since intimate partner violence is not an infectious or communicable disease, Ontario will not declare it an epidemic, province says
Ontario is rejecting calls from a coroner’s inquest into the deaths of three women at the hands of their former partner to formally declare intimate partner violence an epidemic.
The province says that while the government appreciates the intent of the recommendation to declare an epidemic, intimate partner violence is not an infectious or communicable disease.commission and create the role of a survivor advocate, as recommended by the inquest jury, because it would duplicate existing systems.
Several ministries have been working for the past several months to study the best approach, including whether a new law is required or if the province could amend existing policy tools, the province said in its response to the recommendations. Some of the work the government said it is already doing includes considering future updates to the high school curriculum to add information on recognizing healthy and abusive relationships and violence prevention, looking at improvements to training on intimate partner violence within the justice system, and examining police officer training on domestic assault risk assessments.
