Breaking: Ontario to allow earlier alcohol service during the 2022 World Cup

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario said Friday it has approved licensed bars and restaurants to start serving at 7 a.m. during the tournament, which is being held in Qatar from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18. Some games start as early as 5 a.m. Toronto time, with other early kickoffs scheduled for 8 a.m. Normally drink service in Ontario isn’t allowed until 9 a.m.

The mayor said the early service hours would be an important way to boost Toronto’s entertainment sector, which has struggled with COVID-19 for most of the past three years. Provincial law allows the AGCO to temporarily extend service hours for events of local, national, or international importance.
