Police say packages likely containing sodium nitrite were shipped to over 40 countries and more than a dozen communities across Ontario
Law was arrested after an investigation into the online sale and distribution of sodium nitrite that began March 31 with a sudden death believed to have involved consumption of the chemical, Peel police said.“Intentional consumption of certain amounts of this substance can reduce oxygen levels, impair breathing and can result in death,” according to a police statement.Police allege the substance was distributed and marketed online to target individuals at risk of self-harm.
Sodium nitrite is legal in Canada. It is described as a white, crystalline substance used as a food additive and commonly found in processed meats. Intentional consumption of certain amounts of this substance can reduce oxygen-levels, impair breathing and cause death.Article content Law allegedly told an undercover Times reporter, who posed as a suicidal buyer, that people said he was doing “God’s work,” the newspaper reported.When a Times reporter confronted him at a shopping centre in Mississauga where he was delivering packages, the paper alleges he defended his actions: “I’m not doing anything. I’m just selling a product. I’m not assisting. It’s your choice. I’m not forcing you to buy anything.
He has not responded to recent or previous requests for comment from National Post, made to an email address in his name listed on a now-defunct website offering a product identical to one in police photos. The website refers to the product as an agent for speeding up the curing of meat.
