“For me, going to camp is an experience of gaining back some of that humour, fun and joy just by watching kids who are resilient, having fun, and navigating things that are not part of what happens when you’re in the hospital or clinic,” said Alexander. The Muskoka site is the only overnight camp in Canada equipped to provide on-site intravenous chemotherapy and blood transfusions at their infirmary facility, known as the “Med Shed,” which is staffed by health-care workers with expertise in both pediatric care and oncology.“We take kids on canoe trips to Algonquin Park,” he said, explaining that they have an oncology nurse accompanying them for medical support, “so that they can forget about the cancer part and really focus on being a child.
