Winnipeg police and cadet vehicles are pictured near Sherbrook Street and Broadway early Monday morning. The area was taped off overnight after a man died following his arrest, during which he had difficulty breathing, Manitoba's police watchdog says.

An Ontario First Nation says one of its members died while being taken into Winnipeg police custody Sunday.

A spokesperson for the First Nation — which is almost 550 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ont., — identified Elias Whitehead as the man who died. Winnipeg police told the IIU officers were called to Sherbrook Street, in the West Broadway area, shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday, with a report of a man "acting erratically" in traffic, according to a Tuesday news release from the police watchdog.

Police were also contact by a second caller concerned about the man in traffic, the post said. Smyth said in the post that "this was the beginning of a call that was classified as a well-being check."
