The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board had told a parent she could not attend a "community helpers" day if she wore her police uniform.
Lecce, Premier Doug Ford and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe all weighed in, urging the board to reconsider the policy, which dates back to a 2021 board decision to cancel the school resource officer program after the OCDSB’s human rights and equity advisor released a report that found uniformed police officers made some students feel unsafe or threatened.
“Where there are requests for uniformed officers to provide direct learning to students, we review each request to assess the learning opportunity and consider it in the context of alignment with the board direction to have an emergency response-based relationship with police,” the OCDSB said in a statement.
“These students, like the community their parents serve, are understandably proud of that selfless service,” he said. “With rising crime taking hold around the country, we need to better work with law enforcement to counter human trafficking, illegal drugs, cyber bullying, and violence impacting too many communities in Ontario.”
