Police say the crash occurred shortly before noon Sunday when a piece of construction equipment struck the gondola.
Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Eve Brochu-Joubert said the two people were riding in the gondola at the time of the crash.
Under the force of the impact, the occupants, a man and a woman from outside the region, “would have been thrown outside and would have fallen,” the SQ said in an email. “Unfortunately, the two people fell several meters and hit the ground,” said SQ spokesperson Sergeant Eric Cadotte.Investigators from the major crimes division were on the scene, Cadotte said, adding it doesn’t mean police believe the incident was the result of a crime.Article content
“It’s the usual protocol to have people from major crimes to carry out analyses. They’ve set up a scene halfway up the mountain, under the gondola, to clarify the circumstances, but it’s too early to draw any conclusions,” Cadotte said.Mont-Tremblant is about 135 kilometres northwest of Montreal. Resort officials declined to comment on the incident, saying the situation was evolving.
The Festival International du Blues de Tremblant announced Sunday afternoon it was cancelling the remaining blues fest activities for the day out of respect for those involved in the gondola accident.
