Stories of body shaming, rapid weight loss and celebrity all blend together in Vancouver Author\u0027s new novel Fit to Die.
DNP, or dinitrophenol, is very real, extremely poisonous, and frighteningly available online as a weight loss or body-building supplement. It’s actually an explosive that dates back to the trenches of the First World War. It works by causing a hypermetabolic state. But if someone ingests the slightest wrong dose, it can unleash a metabolic storm which can lead to untreatable fevers where a person is effectively cooked from the inside out. There is no antidote and, often, no cure.
Q: As an ER doctor, have you seen a lot of cases of people suffering from the use of iffy weight loss drugs? If so, how do they usually present?No. Fortunately, I have never seen a case of DNP poisoning. I’ve only heard about one tragic local death from DNP. But there have been hundreds of deaths across North America and Europe. Almost all among young, vulnerable people, some of whom followed the exact directions on the bottle.
Q: What drives you nuts about all these quick fixes, snake oil claims that we are inundated with on our social media?Where to begin? Health scams and bogus cure-alls have been around for centuries. But nowadays, social media acts as a toxic echo chamber for body shaming, and it promotes impossible beauty standards and body shapes which often aren’t even real.
Q: We met your protagonist Dr. Julie Rees, a toxicologist and ER doctor and her boyfriend detective Anson Chen in the novel The Last High. Without spoiling anything, what’s new in their lives this time around?Article contentAnson and Julie are on the cusp of moving in together. But they’re also walking a tightrope in their relationship.
Q: If history is any indication, you are likely working on a new novel right now. So, what’s that one about?You know me too well. Yes, I’m tackling a manuscript focused on therapeutic psychedelics. It’s set in Southern California, where a cutting-edge psychiatrist is running ketamine therapy for a group of high-profile clients, but the trip they end up on is wilder than any of them expected.
