This year\u0027s Vancouver International Wine Festival has an impressive selection of wines from South America. Find out what\u0027s on offer.
Here is a strategy for making sense of the Chilean wines at the festival: go from table to table, tasting just those varietals. And don’t miss Purple Angel, as Montes calls its super-premium Carménère. Carménère is a varietal that was almost wiped out in Bordeaux by phylloxera by 1870. It had been planted earlier in Chile, where the vineyards have never had phylloxera.
The flagship red in Uruguay is Tannat, offered by both of the Uruguayan wineries, along with a white varietal called Petit Manseng. Both came to Uruguay around 1870 with Basque immigrants. The Miolo Winery from Brazil is, to my knowledge, the first Brazilian winery admitted to the festival. The family put down roots in Brazil when Giuseppe Miolo immigrated from Italy in 1897. After several generations as grape growers, the family began bottling its own wine in 1992. Today, the Miolo Group operates more than 1,000 hectares of vineyard with four producing wineries. It produces 10 million litres a year and is Brazil’s largest wine exporter.
