The chinook wind kept the air clear enough to see Chief Mountain beyond Head-Smashed-In from west of Granum, Ab., on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.Though the sky was dark with chinook cloud overhead, the air was spectacularly clear with not a bit of haze in any direction. The reason for that, though, wasn’t a lack of pollution or moisture in the air. No, it was because the air was moving at around 60 km/h.
The wind had been strong and gusty but the further south I went, the rougher it became. West of the old Woodhouse siding it was strong enough to tear stubble off the grain fields and when I stopped to shoot Chief Mountain rising behind Head-Smashed-In at the end of the Porcupine Hills it was all I could do to keep the camera steady with the wind hammering the truck.Article content
There was barely any snow here at all. Grain fields were carpets of amber under the chinook-clouded sky, frozen ponds were mosaics of blue, their ice surfaces like random tiles strewn by the wind. The only snow I saw was in the deep ditches and behind windbreaks.Chief Mountain still dominated the southwestern horizon but as I moved away from the Porcupine Hills, the mountains to the west came into view.
Facing into the wind as they came in to land on the fallow fields, the gusts let them hover like hummingbirds as their feet touched the ground. Once down, they hunkered low and walked with their necks tucked against their bodies to keep from being blown around.Article content
