Academic Nathan Sears, 35.Nathan Alexander Sears, 35, was a recent PhD graduate in political science at the University of Toronto who had been a Cadieux-Léger fellow at Global Affairs Canada and a fellow in Peace, Conflict and Justice at the Trudeau Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies. He obtained his Master’s degree in international relations from Carleton University, in 2011, where he won several awards.
“He was fearless in tackling the big questions of our time,” Bernstein said, “specifically on the most powerful countries’ inability to collectively address what he called ‘existential threats to humanity’ that he felt governments were ignoring, from nuclear war to the risk of bioengineered pathogens or ‘unaligned’ artificial intelligence that can’t be controlled. Wu made important contributions to the field of neuroscience in her short career. She obtained her PhD at age 24, in 2016, from the University of Miami. While there, she sought to understand how different tastes, such as sweet and bitter, are represented in the brain. As a postdoctoral researcher at UC San Diego, she worked to uncover mechanisms within the olfactory system that help flexibly detect different odours.
