Off-duty sheriff says she was assaulted by Black Lives Matter protest leader yyc
Cunningham told Crown prosecutor James Pickard she had just finished a lunchtime jog when she went to speak to two uniformed officers watching the protest.McNallie appeared to be yelling, but with loud music and other background noise from the protest she couldn’t make out what was being said.“It was very aggressive and very hostile.”
She said she tried turning away from McNallie, but the accused persisted and Cunningham eventually pushed the phone away.At that moment McNallie struck her in the forehead with the megaphone and other sheriffs moved in to arrest her.Article content Meanwhile, Sheriff Jasdeep Braich testified McNallie aggressively approached as he and uniformed officer Keith Arndt spoke to Cunningham, who was in civilian clothing.
“She was yelling profanities,” Braich told Pickard, in contrast to earlier testimony from Arndt who said McNallie approached them calmly and was polite. But under cross-examination by Haggerty, Braich said he didn’t perceive the situation as threatening. He also denied being biased towards the protesters, who were angry over the 30-day conditional sentence handed Calgary police Const. Alex Dunn for assaulting a handcuffed black woman.
Haggerty will let provincial court Judge Peter Barley know Wednesday whether he’ll be calling any defence evidence.
