An off-duty cop has been charged following an alleged assault of a woman before engaging in an altercation with two officers called to the scene in the NSW Hunter Region.

Two officers were called to the scene at the suburb of Horseshoe Bend in Maitland following reports of an alleged assault at around 11:25 am on Tuesday.They then spoke to the off-duty officer before he tackled them to the ground causing injury to both.The leading senior constable required treatment at hospital after sustaining a knee injury during the altercation.

While the other constable suffered minor facial injuries, both officers were able to overcome the man who was arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station. The 29-year-old off-duty officer was a senior constable with the specialist command and was charged in relation to both alleged interactions. He will face charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm , stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm .The man has also been charged with two counts of assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.The man’s employment status is currently under review.
