From small\u002Dtown Ontario to bright West Coast city lights, Horvat’s evolving leadership, work ethic put him on a path to stardom.
On Tuesday, Desjardins was asked about the genesis of the video to reward the ninth overall selection in the 2013 National Hockey League Draft with a roster spot.
Willie Desjardins fondly recalls guiding a young Bo Horvat into the NHL in 2014. Desjardins was Horvat’s coach for the first three seasons of his NHL career.Desjardins saw all that evolve over three telling seasons in which Horvat started to tease of offensive potential to score 20 goals in 2016-17. And now that the centre has 31 goals and 54 points in 49 games this season — and is on pace for 50 goals and 90 points — it only confirms what Desjardins knew all along.
“He came in and wanted to be an elite player and that’s the way he was wired. He’s one of best skaters in the league right now and his faceoffs have improved and that’s why he has become such a good player.”Article content“Probably not,” Desjardins laughed at Horvat’s scoring pace projection. “Those are huge numbers. He was a really good two-way centre for me and that’s what he still is now. And a lot of him is about family and the way he was raised.
“Every young player is different and McCann has turned out to be really good,” said Desjardins. “He probably had too much success with five goals right off the start and then all the pressure went on him. In the end, you have to find your own way.Brandon Sutter and Bo Horvat, despite their six-year age difference, shared small-town roots and formed a lasting bond as teammates and friends.Brandon Sutter became a teammate and a good friend of Horvat on and off the ice.
Rodney had but 1,000 residents back then and 80 were present to see one of their own play a role in a stunning draft development.
