Which was the more impressive trial on Saturday for next month’s Five Diamonds - Kathy O’Hara and Palmetto holding on in a three-way photo finish, or Unspoken’s romp in the open handicap?
Whether the impressive Unspoken or Palmetto was the best Five Diamonds trial at Randwick on Saturday will be debated for the next three weeks leading into the $2 million race.
“I said to Kathy, you don’t need to worry about taking off, as long as you just hide him away he’s got a good finish, don’t get there too soon and she just timed it perfectly,” trainer John Sargent said. Andrew Adkins was left in front after jumping well and felt he wasn’t going to get beaten a long way out. “When I started to build, he felt so strong that nothing was going to pick me up,” he said.
The five-year-old completed a winning double after Dashing Legend won at her first start for the stable earlier in the day, but there is something special about King Of The Castle. “He came out on his nose. I thought we were in a bit of trouble. But barriers win races and we were able to sneak up doing no work at all,” Jones said. “Got into a lovely spot and built into a lovely rhythm. The way the race panned out I was wanting to be a little bit patient on him an made sure I got there late.”The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Shangri La Express looked a natural as he careered away with the Kirkham Plate.
