THE number of unemployed Filipinos went up to 4.14 million in April from 3.44 million in March due to the imposition of stricter quarantine restrictions, the Philippine Statistics Authority said.

In a briefing on Tuesday, National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa said that based on the latest Labor Force Survey , the number of out-of-work individuals translates to an unemployment rate of 8.7 percent, up from the 7.1 percent recorded a month earlier. April's unemployment figure however was lower than the 7.23 million recorded in the same month last year.

Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal were placed under an enhanced community quarantine for the most part of April, which Mapa said affected the movement of workers and increased unemployment rate. The Labor Force Participation Rate rate meanwhile settled at 63.2 percent accounting for 48.7 million Filipinos 15 years and over who were in the labor force, down from the 65 percent in March but higher than the 55.7 percent in April last year.Get the latest news from your inbox for free
