Labor's architect of the super shires, former local government minister Elliot McAdam, said he supported the CLP's push for local government reform."I am hearing right across the board that there needs to be a review of the existing local government arrangements around the shire model, to ensure there is a better service provision … better local decision making and far greater investment on the part of governments," Mr McAdam said.
"They might win a few seats in Darwin, but they're not going to provide the basic improvements to quality of life that people in the bush are calling for." "I've been in politics before, just before elections, you announce a policy that looks really attractive to some people," Mr Vatskalis, a former Labor minister, said."They might do some of them, but it's not going to be a wholesale return to community councils."Mr Vatskalis said the CLP's review should look into voter engagement, local employment and training, rather than simply revisiting the former community council model.
