New South Wales is set to introduce a domestic coal reservation policy to mitigate energy shortfalls across the state.
State Treasurer Matt Kean is widely tipped to issue orders which will see coal miners reserve up to 10 per cent of their output.
The order follows rules implemented before Christmas, which included a $125 a tonne cap on the price of coal sold to local retailers. It’s believed New South Wales generators will need around 22 million tonnes of coal this year to remain operational.
