With many students returning to class on Monday, Chair for the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Jane Halton says- including hygiene practices and rapid antigen testing - would make a difference in reducing transmission.
“We’ll have a strategy that means for the next four weeks we will be able to surveil this and be able to tell exactly how many cases have come from schools reopening,” Prof Halton said. With kids returning to school today, there may be a spike in COVID-19 cases, but Prof. Jane Halton says COVID-safe measures taken by schools would help in reducing transmission.More than 320,000 children will be starting school for the first time, and about 240,000 students will be starting year 12.
Sarah Mitchell said the state government had ticked every box in terms of managing transmission risks as schools return. The latest numbers come as parents are set to get a $500 voucher for each primary school child to help with before and after school care costs, as students return to class this week.
Premier Dominic Perrottet will announce the $155 million program to support parents and the out-of-school hours care industry on Monday, theThe new $500 voucher scheme comes a day after the government announced a $1 billion support package for businesses hit by the Omicron outbreak.
