Commuters in New South Wales will enjoy indefinite free travel from Thursday, with the rail union planning to switch off Opal card readers as part of its ongoing dispute with the state government.
The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has been engaged in a lengthy stoush with the state government for many months and train workers are now set to turn off Opal card machines from Thursday in another push for better pay and work conditions.

"Rail workers have been committed to providing workers with free travel because, frankly, they deserve it after everything the NSW government has put them through,” he said on Monday.
The RBTU have conducted a series of industrial actions in recent months as part of their campaign to fight for fairer wages and safer working conditions.In September, the government threatened to rip up the current enterprise agreement with the union unless they agreed to end all industrial action including train strikes.
