The announcement comes as part of a plan using improved access to childcare as an economic lever to get more parents back to work.
The NSW Coalition has promised to bring forward $1 billion in childcare spending to kick-start construction on the first of 500 new preschools, in a election pledge that will accelerate a plan to give every four-year-old in the state a year of pre-kindergarten by 2030.straining to find childcare places for their children, the Coalition has promised to speed a $1 billion offering of grants to help expand or build new childcare centres, with construction to start before the end of the year.
The latest announcement will ensure that the first 500 new childcare centres dedicated to universal pre-kindy will begin construction by the end of the year, with a total capacity upon completion in 2030 of 50,000 kids.“More than a third of communities across the state are experiencing an undersupply of childcare centres, with families facing long waitlists or long commutes to the nearest centre,” Mr Perrottet said.
At the time of the 2022 budget, Treasurer Matt Kean said childcare improvements, including new preschools and additional places, could prompt another 95,000 women to enter the workforce or take on more hours. He also revealed a pilot of the universal pre-kindy program would kick off this month at 71 existing preschools, testing different elements of the reform, including increased attendance, extended hours of operation, and transition to school programs. By the time it reaches maturity, the plan will cater to more than 100,000 four-year-olds a year.

NSW Coalition taking a ‘more progressive energy position’ than LaborThe two positions taken today by the NSW government and the state Opposition ahead of a tight poll are “astonishing”, says Sky News host Sharri Markson. Ms Markson said Labor leader Chris Minns on talkback radio said Labor would 'actually consider buying back' the Eraring coal fired power station as it's set to close in two years' time. “Treasurer and Energy Minister Matt Kean was also quoted today saying that he's open to extending Eraring's lifespan,' she said. “But it wasn't even midday before Kean had backtracked on his position, he now says he's not planning to keep open the country's largest coal-fired power station, his office says any suggestion is rubbish – instead, they say a super battery will take its place. “You have the New South Wales Coalition taking a more progressive energy position than Labor, while Labor, under Chris Minns, is actually leaving open the option of extending the coal fired power – not just extending but owning a coal fired power station.”
