Nova Scotia requests federal disaster assistance, military aid amid 'shocking' devastation left by FionaPeople walk around a large uprooted tree in Halifax that was knocked down by high winds during hurricane Fiona. Premier Tim Houston said the province has asked Ottawa for military assistance and federal disaster aid in the wake of the devastation caused by the storm.

Houston was speaking from his home in rural Pictou County where he said roads have been washed out and “an incredible amount” of trees and power poles were down. A request to the federal government for federal disaster assistance funding also has been made. This funding helps municipalities with damage from flooding, washed out roads and other infrastructure, and can help people and small businesses pay for uninsured losses, the release said.During the news conference, Lohr said federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair has assured him the disaster relief money and military assistance would be coming “very quickly.

“It’s turned out to be everything that’s been predicted and it’s affected people across the province.” One building was severely damaged in the middle of the night and one early Saturday morning, said Erica Fleck, emergency management chief for HRM. About 160 residents have been displaced.
