The interior of a human body is seen in plastinatized form at the Body Worlds Vital exhibition at the Musem of Natural History in Halifax. - Tim KrochakIf you’re interested in learning about human biology, you may want to check out the latest offering at the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History.

“Our largest and heaviest organ, it acts as a barrier to micro-organisms, stops us from drying out, regulates our temperature and provides us with cues about our environment.” The displays present up-to-date information about common diseases, the effects of tobacco use and the mechanics of artificial body parts.

The Body Worlds Vital exhibition was created in 1995 and has drawn more than 52 million visitors across the world in that time, said curator and exhibition designer Dr. Angelina Whalley on Thursday. “It’s important to experience an exhibition like Body Worlds to see how intricately the human body is made and get an understanding of a healthy lifestyle,” Whalley said.

Gray acknowledges this graphic glimpse into the human body may not be for everybody. In fact, there have been protests at some plastination exhibitions includingover displays in London in 2002 because they were “horrifying” and “disrespectful.”
