‘Nothing to lose’: The change ‘negative’ Marnus needed to make for World Cup dream
“He just weasels his way in there, doesn’t he? He just lurks in there,” Khawaja laughed.“It doesn’t surprise me that he’s in there.”It’s become a recurring theme throughout Labuschagne’s international career. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2018 after Matthew Renshaw suffered a head knock during a warm-up match in the United Arab Emirates.
Despite his blistering form, there still wasn’t room in Australia’s 15-player squad for another batter — but injuries for Travis Head and Agar provided the means for Labuschagne’s eleventh-hour inclusion. Since last month’s surprise axing, he has shifted focus from rotating the strike throughout the middle overs to finding the boundary rope, a change that Khawaja believes motivated his recent purple patch.
“I always see you work backwards in one-day cricket. You look for the boundary, and if you can’t, you work back down. He’s been a little bit the other way. He’s been trying to get himself into the innings, and maybe overcomplicating a little bit.
