Australia’s consumer watchdog has issued a warning to parents.
“They would’ve never been in my house,” she toldLocally, from 2004 to 2016, the NSW Poisons Information Centre received reports of 129 incidents involving water-absorbing beads.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alerted consumers to the dangers of water beads back in 2015. “The products are small and colourful and can be attractive to young children, who naturally place items in their mouths at early stages of their development,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said at the time.
The ACCC has also urged consumers to “immediately” stop their children from using the beads as toys or playthings.Product Safety Australia, which is run by the ACCC, has issued several recalls over the past few years for products containing water beads.The small beads can expand to the size of a golf ball once it comes into contact with a liquid.In the wake of her daughter’s death, Taylor has called for water beads to be banned in the United States.
