More than seven months after receiving cross-party support in the House, a bill to further protect supply management sits mired at second reading in the Red Chamber as some Senators are increasingly raising opposition.
In a statement to , Independent Senator Marty Deacon said she has “concerns that the bill would unnecessarily tie the hands of our trade negotiators should it pass,” remarking that it is “not sound strategy to show your hand when you sit down at the table.” However, Deacon said she would vote for the bill at second reading so it can be studied by the Foreign Affairs Committee. Bloc Québécois MP Luc Thériault's Bill C-282 received all-party support in the House of Commons.
