Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews has turned up the heat on the Albanese government and urged the prime minister to prioritise fixing the nation’s crippled Medicare system.

In his first press conference of the new year, Mr Andrews urged the Commonwealth to overhaul the primary care network through the national cabinet in 2023 as he opened another state run bulk billing centre to help relieve the strain on emergency departments.

But this is not our job,” he said at the newly opened Heidelberg Priority Primary Care Centre at Austin Hospital in Melbourne’s north-east on Tuesday.

In a joint venture, NSW has also committed to establishing 25 primary care services in partnership with general practitioners aimed to take the pressure off hospitals by treating urgent medical issues such as fractures, burns and mild infections.
