'Not a surprise': New Zealand slides into recession

New Zealand is in recession after new statistics showed a second straight quarter of negative growth but the Hipkins government said it 'was not a surprise' amid high inflation and natural disasters.

Data released on Thursday showed the nation's gross domestic product declined 0.1 per cent in the March quarter, after a 0.7 per cent drop in the December quarter.

"The adverse weather events caused by the cyclones contributed to falls in horticulture and transport support services, as well as disrupted education services. But Mr Robertson also expressed his optimism the country"can handle these testing times and grow out the other side".
