Cooking Culinary Adventure: inspired by Halifax's Seaport Market | SaltWire #cooking #cookingshortsNORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — Dorothy Halliday’s organization has hosted many community fairs. However, none have been this big.
The fair welcomed a record 50 organizations from across Cape Breton Regional Municipality — ranging from youth centres and health services to legal resources and employers — who gathered at North Sydney’s Emera Centre Northside. The event’s goal was to spread awareness of nearby services that locals in need may not have thought of before.
“It started with a bang. People were waiting for us to open at 1 o’clock,” she said. “On a rainy day like this, this is exceptional.”The involvement of the Northside the Lakes Community Health Board — the local branch of the provincial CHB — helped generate a theme for the event: community well-being. Healthy habits such as eating well and exercising were the focus of several booths, with the goal of improving health community-wide.
Paul Ratchford of the youth centre said the organization’s involvement with CCYO and the fair is crucial, especially when seeking resources for marginalized youth at the centre. In the past, similar fairs have helped Clifford Street find job and volunteer opportunities for its participants.“This event today was an absolutely awesome, spectacular and much-needed event to get people connecting and see who’s still out there after the last three years of torture,” said Ratchford.
Andie Currie, a social justice support worker with Nova Scotia Legal Aid. “When you have an event of this nature, it kind of reminds people that you’re out there." LUKE DYMENT/CAPE BRETON POST
