Wildfire service warns drought conditions likely to continue with low snowpack, warm weather in forecast
The BC Wildfire Service says it will likely be another summer of battling tough blazes in the province's northeastern corner, and that warm weather and ongoing drought conditions will pose challenges elsewhere as well. They noted that the average provincial snowpack remains far below normal – 57 per cent as of June 1 – and that, while long range rain forecasts aren't always reliable, B.C. is unlikely to receive enough precipitation over the summer to alleviate the drought it is facing.
And its not just this season's fires that are keeping firefighters busy in that region, either. The BC Wildfire Service says it is monitoring 88 holdover fires from 2023 that continue to burn in the Prince George Fire Centre.
