No tsunami threat in PH after strong quake in Fiji Islands

State seismologists said there is “no destructive tsunami threat” to the Philippines following a powerful quake in Fiji Islands.

The earthquake with a magnitude measuring 6.7 occurred around 3:09 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. It was located in the Fiji Islands Region with a depth of 587 kilometers.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only,” said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in its advisory issued at 3:23 p.m. A tsunami is a series of sea waves generated by wide-scale events including earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions.
