No Reason for Optimism in 2025
POLITICSUS POLITICSTRUMP

A look ahead at the new year reveals little cause for optimism. The author expresses deep concern over the prospect of another Trump presidency and the influence of Elon Musk.

We have finally reached the end of 2024, and as a sort of exclamation point on just how frenetic the year was, the news in the 24 hours preceding my sitting down to write this column early yesterday (Monday) morning included a deadly plane crash in South Korea; another plane crash in Canada, although one that fortunately did not have any casualties; Azerbaijan openly accusing Russia of trying to cover up its 'mistaken' attack against the Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan on

Christmas Day; growing calls in Sweden and among the Baltic states for another Article 4 meeting of NATO in the face of increasing Russian aggression, which would be the second such meeting in a little over a month; and the death of former US president Jimmy Carter. At this time of the year, it is an unwritten tradition that we offer some outlook for the year ahead, and an unwritten rule of that tradition is that we do so with at least a modicum of positivity, something along the spectrum between 'cautious optimism' to 'blowing sunshine up everyone's skirt.' If that's what you're here for, I'm afraid you're going to have to keep moving, because from where I sit, there is little to no reason for any optimism for the coming year. If it's any consolation to you, it's a new experience for me, too; I cannot remember ever heading into a new year with such a feeling of dread. The sources of that sense of foreboding are obvious. The prospects of another Trump presidency are alarming in every sense, and there is not one inkling that any positive or progressive development will emerge from his second term in office, especially since it is already clear he will be a powerless figurehead under the complete control of the dangerously unstable neo-Nazi Elon Musk. What damage the new leadership will cause to the US and the world generally is unpredictable at this point, but I will bet real money that it will be a great deal worse than anyone can imagine
