Union members refused to vacate the chamber when Liverpool’s Liberal mayor Ned Mannoun called a closed session to debate the future of chief executive John Ajaka, a former Liberal MP.

Police were called to a chaotic meeting of Liverpool City Council on Wednesday as union members allegedly refused to vacate the chamber for a closed-door debate about the future of council chief executive John Ajaka, a former Liberal MP.

Ajaka is alleged to have told Mannoun to “shut the f--- up” amid a heated discussion about staffing. Ajaka was contacted for comment. John Ajaka, who was president of the Legislative Council, quit parliament in March 2021. He took up the Liverpool job in December 2022.In a reference to widely publicised rumours he wanted to sack Ajaka, Mannoun said: “I would be surprised if anybody lost their job tonight. That would come as a shock to me.”

Are you threatening us, Mr Ristevski?” When the closed session was called, union members and Ristevski refused to leave the chamber, prompting the council to call the police. Donley said they left the room once police arrived and explained they were breaching the law.

The resolution was backed by Mannoun, deputy mayor Fiona Macnaught and four other councillors. Four councillors voted against, including Labor’s Charishma Kaliyanda, who is also the state MP for Liverpool.
