Alexandra Arriev
Five days after Hamas militants stormed several Israeli communities, killing hundreds of civilians and soldiers, families of those who are believed to have been abducted in the attack say they are struggling to get information about their relatives and fear for their safety as Israeli blankets Gaza with retaliatory airstrikes.Karina Arriev, 19, went missing during Saturday's attack by Hamas.
Her sister said she was huddled in a bomb shelter in Nachal Oz with other girls in her military unit. "She asked me to take care of my parents, so they will continue their lives, even if she will be dead," Arriev said.WARNING: This video contains graphic content. Hamas has taken more than 100 Israelis hostage, including many civilians, and is threatening to execute one each time Israel launches airstrikes on Gaza without first warning civilians. Andrew Chang breaks down what we know about the hostages — and how Israel must calculate moves to secure their return.
"At that moment, we went to the police to say that we saw a video and we recognized her and what should we do?"Canadian Asia Mathkour, who lives in Gaza with her family, says she hopes Canada can help them get out soon, and hopes that they aren't left stranded and waiting for days to hear from somebody.
She jumped out of bed and took her two young children to the bomb shelter in their home. Once the sirens had subsided, Onn and her family tried to go back to bed. But as with the Arrievs, messages in a family Whatsapp group chat quickly changed the course of their morning. "We know it took hours for the Israeli army to gain control of the kibbutz, and by the time they did, it had been burned to the ground, and many people had been slaughtered," said Onn. "But they know that those five weren't there."Five members of Abbey Onn's family are believed to have been kidnapped by Hamas from Nir Oz near the Gaza border.
Arriev's family, on the other hand, received confirmation from the IDF that Karina was taken hostage, but only after the family reported seeing her in the Telegram video.
