Clayton Oliver is staying at Melbourne ending a frenzied week of trade speculation following talks with coach Simon Goodwin during which the four-time best and fairest winner confirmed his commitment to the club.
Speculation about Oliver’s future arose amid concerns over his professionalism while injured during the season while he also felt he wasn’t looked after well enough.
Oliver, who is contracted until 2030 and is one of the club’s highest paid players, immediately became the subject of interest from several clubs. But ahead of the club’s best and fairest dinner on Friday night, the saga has ended with Oliver staying put.Melbourne star Christian Petracca said the Demons had to protect their club culture and that Oliver was “fine” despite a week of speculation about his future“One of the biggest things in footy clubs is culture, culture will always be the forefront for everyone, so I think that is the biggest thing we are focusing on at the moment.
Melbourne legend Garry Lyon said he was “horrified at the thought” of Oliver being moved out of the club and that has now been averted following the crisis talks.Sam Newman has admitted he lost the plot in a podcast blow up that saw his co-host storm out. The segment has now been deleted. The Sydney Swans have been unmasked as the club that should have the rest of the league worried during the AFL Trade Period.
