THE Commission on Elections on Tuesday said it would no longer be feasible to conduct a plebiscite on Charter change alongside the 2025 midterm polls.Chairman George Erwin Garcia said even after the midterm polls, the commission would be hard-pressed to stage a plebiscite because the Supreme Court has mandated village and youth elections in December 2025.'There's no more time this year. Comelec cannot do it,' Garcia said.
'We will comply with our mandate in accordance with the Constitution,' Garcia said, even as he described the timelines as 'too tight.'In February, then-Senate president Juan Miguel Zubiri said President Marcos Jr. had expressed his desire for the simultaneous holding of the plebiscite and the 2025 midterm elections. At the time, Garcia acknowledged that doing so would save the government about P13 billion, which it would need to spend if the plebiscite were held separately.
