Gaming shops will no longer be allowed to operate in PAS-led Kedah effective today following the state government’s decision not to renew the licences of such premises.
Menteri besar Sanusi Md Nor said local authorities had been told to check if any such outlets were still operating. “If they want their gambling licences and business licences back, they will have to vote for Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional in Kedah,” he told FMT.PAS is part of Perikatan Nasional, which are rivals to PH and BN.
A short reprieve was given later, with licences not to be renewed after Dec 31, 2022 as federal approvals for 4D shops were in effect until then. There are 45 gaming outlets in the state, according to a written reply in the Kedah assembly, with one immediately shuttering when the ban was announced in 2021. DAP has since filed a court challenge against Kedah’s “unreasonable” refusal to renew the business licences of 4D shops.
