As scientists monitor Covid-19 infections across South Africa ahead of the country's potential fifth wave, one expert says it could be driven by a new variant.
"Since the second wave, this [has been] the case, so it is quite likely that the next wave will be driven by a new variant," KRISP infectious diseases specialist Dr Richard Lessells told Health24. "But we are again in a period of uncertainty [of] whether a new variant will be a descendent of Omicron, or whether a new distinct variant will emerge somewhere in the world that is unrelated to the previous variants of concern , and that is able to gain an advantage and spread widely," he added.Subscribe to News24 for just R75 per month to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
