CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The NL West SPCA is still looking for somewhere to set up a temporary shelter to care for the 30 cats surrendered into its care in an animal hoarding case in Corner Brook. The organization was notified of the hoarding situation by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary on Sept. 30. The RNC and the City of Corner Brook’s animal control division assisted in their removal and the SPCA set up a temporary shelter in a city-owned building.
The city has denied that suggestion and, in a statement issued on Oct. 6, said it had urged the SPCA to find a longer-term location and even offered to pay for a temporary space. The location is not ideal, as the cats have to be kept in their cages and there are issues with water, but she said it will work until the SPCA can find another location.
She said she hopes the SPCA will be able to find a location within the next week, and moving the cats could be done quickly.
