Ella Bourque says she was both excited and a little scared by the noise and ferocity of post-tropical storm Fiona. The nine-year-old experienced last weekend’s devastating weather event at her family’s home that’s situated just across the road from New Haven Bay, which is located one kilometre north of Neil’s Harbour in northeastern Cape Breton. - David JalaNEW HAVEN, N.S.

The road around New Haven Cove is broken. It’s open to traffic, but sections are washed away, the pavement is gone and a small vehicular bridge was destroyed leaving residents of several homes cut off except for a temporary pedestrian bridge that was erected after the storm. “I looked out and saw that the rock causeway that protects the harbour was completely submerged and later I saw that the end of it was gone, washed away,” he said.
Five days later, Co-operative officials, including general manager Osborne Burke, were still assessing the damage. A tour of the multi-million dollar operation gave some indication of the damages caused by the high winds and storm surge.
