Former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced Tuesday she is running for president, becoming the first high-profile candidate to challenge Donald Trump –- her onetime boss — for the Republican nomination.
CHARLESTON, United States –
“It’s time for a new generation of leadership — to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border and strengthen our country, our pride and our purpose,” she said in the video shot in Bamberg, the South Carolina town of her birth. “They say the promise of freedom is just made up. Some think our ideas are not just wrong, but racist and evil. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
Haley also took a swipe at the current president — who has not formally announced his re-election campaign but is expected to run again — saying, “Joe Biden’s record is abysmal.” But after Trump won he tapped her as his UN envoy, and Haley became the face of diversity in a cabinet criticized for being too white.
“Even though Nikki Haley said, ‘I would never run against my President, he was a great President, the best President in my lifetime,’ I told her she should follow her heart and do what she wants to do,” he said. “I wish her luck!”
