Nieman: Nurture kids' curiosity and then let nature takes its course yyc
Jonas Berard, 6, had fun trying out the human claw machine to grab treats at Telus Spark on Oct. 30, 2022. Gavin Young/Postmedia.Recently I found myself in the Telus Spark Science Centre, surrounded by parents, grandparents and exuberant children. At that moment, despite the diversity of all the guests, I sensed a oneness with my fellow curious “brothers” and “sisters.”
How many children find science boring until they learn that when they sit still, resting, it takes about a minute for all the blood to pass through a heart, but that during heavy exercise it happens about every 10 seconds? How many people know that the world’s shortest person measured 62.
As I walked around the room in Telus Spark where children are encouraged to engage in sensory play, I looked at some faces and noticed the embodiment of radiant inner energy. At that point, I decided to forget the academic views on “the four stages of curiosity.” It was far too theoretical. Instead, I watched the parents watch their children’s happy faces as laughter and excitement filled the air. All of this made possible by curiosity.
