TAYLOR MADE: Nick Taylor becomes first Canuck man to win Canadian Open since 1954 after marathon playoff thriller Via jonmccarthySUN
For a few holes it looked as though the on-the-fly interview might have been a jinx as Taylor bogeyed the 16th hole to fall one shot back of clubhouse leader Tyrell Hatton, who shot an 8-under 64 to finish in a tie for third at 16 under with Aaron Rai and 54-hole leader C.T. Pan . But Taylor brushed off the mistake with a birdie-birdie finish making 18- and 12-foot putts on the final two holes.
Taylor wasn’t the only one with friends following his every move in the playoff as Fleetwood had fellow Englishmen Rose and Hatton racing between the 18th and ninth holes as the playoff scene shifted. But this day was about Canada’s golf fraternity and Taylor had a few others on his mind.I can’t not mention Stephen Ames. He was great to me when I first started playing out here and some of the U.S. Opens when I was an amateur.
Pat Fletcher’s 1954 win is now one page further back in Canada’s golf history book after Taylor’s fairy-tale ending at Oakdale.
