News Corp’s Robert Thomson said the company was in talks with an unnamed AI firm about financial compensation, warning specialist AI is “obviously using Dow Jones” content.
News Corp has thrown down the gauntlet to the likes of ChatGPT owner Open AI, insisting AI firms will need to pay news publishers for the right to use its technology on “proprietary” content.
“As these AI engines are being trained, and they’re using professional content to be more professional themselves – people certainly will talk about open source, but clearly they are using proprietary content,” Mr Thomson said. Mr Thomson was among those who led the media industry to extract hundreds of millions of dollars in annual payments from companies like Google and Facebook.
