This weekend, a couple of dozen youth from central and western Newfoundland are getting hands-on lesson in Mi’kmaw ways from Qalipu First Nation at Max Simms Camp near Bishop Falls.

“This is not as remote as it’s going to get. It’s going to get much more remote as we move forward. It’s kind of like people dipping their toes in the water, so to speak.” They’ll learn how spruce tips are full of vitamins, and how early European settlers learned from natives that they help prevent scurvy.“People learn about smudging, about some of the background stories, our creation stories. Why do we use eagle feathers? That kind of thing,” Pike said.Stories were never just about entertainment.
