“There were people with great doubts that thought a fishing shed was not appropriate for the Lord,” Squires says in “,” filmmaker Kenneth J. Harvey’s award-winning 2017 documentary capturing Squires’ completion of his final painting while living with terminal cancer. “Then I decided I was going to use all my atheist friends as apostles. It wasn’t meant to offend, it was meant as a statement of what Christ himself did, but when they saw my version they changed their mind.
Squires’ artworks were not part of the church sale and went up for auction through Bartlett Auction House of St. John’s last month. The auction ended Tuesday, Feb. 28, with each of Squires’ three main pieces involved in an active, anonymous online bidding war to the final minute.
