A man has been jailed for holding two Newcastle service station workers hostage, one of whom helped resolve the 'terrifying' situation by saying she was pregnant.
Emergency warnings are in place for fires burning near Tenterfield, Tabulam, Cooks Gap and Stanthorpe, NSW; Wallangarra, Dalveen and south of Bundaberg, QLD.A man has been jailed for holding two Newcastle service station workers hostage, one of whom told the offender she was pregnant in a bid to be let go.
The offender then allegedly entered the Ampol service station, pointed the pistol at two console operators and threatened to shoot them if they didn't hand him the keys to their car.Wright then allegedly forced his way into that office, holding the staff hostage for nearly 10 minutes.Wright allegedly said: "I have two hostages ... I will pop one in the head and one in the chest.
"He was haphazard and clumsy with the way he was handling the firearm … it was not a case of him inflicting actual bodily harm or that he was tying them up.""What the offender was doing was telling two detainees he was a gangster ... and that he had killed two or three people," she said."It wasn't a toy gun, it wasn't green or pink, it was a firearm prohibited because of the danger it creates," she said.
Judge McGrath said Wright's offending was serious both during the carjacking and when he took the workers hostage."Mr Wright's behaviour was very erratic, such that the two victims might have expected that he could use the gun at any time."
