The Waitangi National Trust confirmed to Australian Associated Press that the barbecue is not in next year’s schedule, amidA government spokesperson said a final decision was yet to be made on the 2023 Waitangi Day barbecue, but said security concerns were weighing heavily on their minds. New Zealand’s Covid-19 measures were seized on by some fringe groups and furious – sometimes-violent – protests from anti-vaccine, anti-government and far-right groups have marred 2022.
Those groups have not fully dissolved even as New Zealand discarded its anti-Covid measures. At least two men, both of whom were incensed by the country’s vaccination drive, have been arrested this year for repeatedly threatening to assassinate Ardern.
