struck at 7.38pm on Wednesday and was centred 50km north-west of the town of Paraparaumu, which is about 10km north of the capital, Wellington, at a depth of 48km.New Zealand's North Island has been rocked by 6.1 magnitude earthquake.
It was felt from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island.The last strong earthquake, also measuring 6, was 5km south of Te Aroha, a town in the north of the North Island, on February 3.
